The different assessments of the Swedish life science industry - what factors are behind the bright respectively the dark interpretation?

The research assessments of the Swedish life science industry is divided into two groups, one characterized by a rather bright and th other by a much darker assessment. In short, the first group is most often relying on approaches developed for analyis on a high level of abstraction, such as national innovation system, cluster or triple helix approaches. (Elzinga, 2004, Hogselius, 2009, Eklund, 2007, 2013, Waluszewski, 2011)The second group of studies is represented by researchers with an empirical based approach as common denominator (Mirowski, 2011) of which several are utilizing the IMP analytical framework (Waluszewski, 2004, Shih, 2009, Linne, 2010, Ingemansson, 2011, Baraldi & Waluszewski, 2011).This raises some important questions concerning the relation among the theoretical underpinnings and research outcome. Can the bright respectively dark interpretation of the economic situation of the Swedish life science industry be related to some common analytical presuppositions? The research question concerns what factors that are, expliticly or implicitly, assumed to be behind the emergence of new, and renewal of existing companies in each group of study.
