Follicular Zygomycosis: A Potentially Benign Form of Cutaneous Zygomycosis Infection

Cutaneous zygomycosis is a rare disease usually associated with a high rate of mortality and morbidity due to the angioinvasive properties of the fungus. We report an unusual case of cutaneous zygomycosis that involved only the hair follicle. In lieu of the more typical treatment of surgical debridement with adjunctive intravenous or oral antifungal therapy, this case was treated conservatively with topical miconazole and immune reconstitution, by discontinuing immunosuppressant medication, because of the limited nature of the infection. We propose that follicular zygomycosis is a potentially benign form of cutaneous infection that can be treated by topical therapy alone.
