The Value-Adding Procedure of Scientific Inputs in the Overseas R&D Laboratory: From Recruitment to the Board of Directors, an Inter-functional Process

The aim of this chapter is to analyze the value-adding procedure of human capital, that of scientists, in the overseas R&D laboratory of a Multinational Enterprise (MNE). The arguments developed, and the data presented, come from a recent questionnaire survey1 (carried out in 1994) which investigated the spillover effects of the scientific activities of MNEs in the UK. The questionnaire was sent to 180 R&D laboratories and 48 valid responses (or 26.7 per cent of the population) were received, and thus are used in this analysis.
