This paper presents a new position sensor based on ultraacoustic standing waves in FeSiB amorphous wires. The generation of ultraacoustic standing waves and the measurement of their amplitude are both based on the magnetostrictive effect in these materials. The position determination is accomplished by measuring the amplitude of standing waves in corresponding position along the active length of the sensor.
