Photoelectric effect under strong irradiation

Abstract Atoms submitted to intense radiation are ionized regardless of the light frequency by simultaneous absorption of several photons. Furthermore, once it has been released by this multiphoton ionization process, the electron can absorb extra photons and gain kinetic energy. This paper reviews recent studies of multiphoton ionization and above-threshold ionization viewed as natural extensions of the photoelectric effect towards the high-intensity regime. Experimental information can also be obtained in such experiments on the coupling of a quasi-free electron with the strong progressive electromagnetic wave.
