Full electrical propulsion for a future warship

An overview of the current technology for naval marine electric drive systems is presented together with an assessment of the most suitable full electric propulsion system for future frigates. The effects of harmonics in full electric drives are discussed in detail and the results of investigations carried out at the Royal Naval Engineering College are presented. A comprehensive analysis of a cycloconverter propulsion system is given based on investigations of the performance of a model cycloconverter system. The results of a computer simulation study together with an investigation into the optimum design of the propulsion motor are also given.
