Numerical Assessment of Induced Current Densities for Pregnant Women Exposed to 50 Hz Electromagnetic Field

A simple, yet anatomically realistic model consisting of five different tissue types was built to evaluate the effects of the low-frequency electromagnetic field on a pregnant woman and fetus. The model was exposed to the reference levels of the electric and magnetic field recommended by the ICNIRP guidelines. The induced current densities were calculated by finite element method and results were compared to the basic restriction recommended by the ICNIRP. The basic restrictions were met in all tissues and all orientations of the electric and magnetic fields, except (2.08 mA/m2) when the model was exposed to a vertical electric field and a sagittal magnetic field simultaneously. Since the simultaneous exposure to yields higher induced current values in the body, both should always be taken into account in low-frequency dosimetry numerical modeling.
