Etiologic analysis of 2135 cases of superficial mycosis in Chongqing region

Objective:To investigate the etiologic distribution of pathogenic fungi in superficial mycoses in Chongqing region. Methods:Direct microscopy, culture and identification of pathogenic fungi were performed on clinical specimens collected from 2 135 cases of superficial mycoses in our hospital from January 2005 to December 2006. Results:The positive rates were 66.5% detected by microscopy and 55.7% by culture. The pathogenic fungi included 872 strains of T.rubrum(68.2%),50 strains of M.canis(3.9%),48 strains of T.mentagrophytes(3.8%),173 strains of Candida sp. and yeast(13.5%),26 strains of Aspergillus sp.(2.0%),11 strains of Penicillum sp.(0.9%). Conclusions:Dermatophytes are predominant in the superficial fungal infections in Chongqing region. The positive rates of both microscopy and culture in male patients are higher than those in the females, and lower in winter season than those in other three seasons. T. rubrum is the most common pathogenic fungus, which is significantly less in the group under fifteen-year-old than that in other age groups.
