Infant formula quality control

Abstract: Infants deprived of breast milk require high-quality infant formulae as a substitute to obtain the nutrients they need, particularly preterm and very low-birth-weight infants who are at high risk of poor growth. Quality control of infant formula is therefore just as crucial as feeding practice in ensuring the avoidance of health problems. This chapter has been divided into three parts: (1) an introduction to infant formula, its importance and major concerns; (2) infant formula quality control systems, such as current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) and hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP), and outline regulations in developed and emerging countries; and (3) quality control parameters, such as microbiology, environment and nutrition.
