A climate strategy for Africa

The report offers an initial statement on the problems of climate change in Africa, arguing what must the Bank do to help African countries achieve environmentally sustainable development (ESD), focusing on which issues make development unsustainable in Sub-Saharan Africa. Inspired by the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Bank has launched a reflection process to address those issues, a process that seeks to define the Bank's medium-term agenda for helping Sub-Saharan borrowers attain ESD. With respect to time, the process has focused on both past, and future historical perspectives. The future time horizon is 2025, i.e., 30 years, corresponding roughly to a generation. Looking backward, the process focuses on the past decade, and the Bank's association with Africa, in order to measure the full magnitude of environmental issues.
