Development of 3-D Imaging Systems for Postal Automation

Sununary The U.S. Postal Service is sponsoring advanced research in the development of three-dimensional imaging systems for postal automation. Three contractors have successfully designed and constructed ranging systems based on techniques which include structured light triangulation and phase shift detection. Extensive tests are befng conducted to evaluate their performance under simulated mail sorting conditions. Both stationary and moving target fields of single and multiple mail pieces have been examined. Initial results indicate that image acquisition is feasible in real time, while a range resolution in the order of less than 10 mills can be achieved. Studies are under way to assess possible applications of these systems in mail sorting operations, such as culling and singulation, and for transfer into cost effective, deployable devices.
