Design of a Supervisor for Traffic Light Systems

Timed Coloured Petri net (TCPN) has been utilized as a visual formalism for the modeling of complex systems. A module of basic traffic system of TCPN model is successfully constructed in this paper. Especially, a supervisor of an urban traffic light system, which consists of five intersections with multiple phases, is implemented by the new methodology. And all the traffic operations are ruled by the control logic of TCPN. In addition, a new design tool is proposed and it is efficiently to state and solve the problem of traffic signal timing plans. Finally, a supervisor of the traffic light system is completed whose operation flow is modeled by the TCPN models.
