STABILIZATION OF SAND FOR ROADBASES. APPLICATION OF SAND-BITUMEN

FOLLOWING A DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE STABILIZATION OF SAND WITH BITUMEN FOR SUBBASES AND ROADBASES BACK TO 1951, MENTION IS MADE OF NEW TYPES OF SAND-BITUMEN MIXTURE, WHICH ENABLE SAND-BITUMEN TO BE USED NEARER THE ROAD SURFACE. CRUSHED OR GROUND SAND IS ADDED TO THE ORIGINAL SAND TO CORRECT THE GRADING OF THE LATTER, TO INCREASE ITS ANGULARITY AND TO DECREASE THE VOIDS CONTENT; ANOTHER METHOD IS TO ADD SULPHUR TO THE MIXTURE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF ALL MIX DESIGN FORMULAE, MANUFACTURING CONDITIONS (LOCATION OF MIXING PLANT AT THE SITE OF SAND EXTRACTION, TEMPERATURE TO BE MAINTAINED: 130 DEG C), CONDITIONS OF TRANSPORT AND APPLICATION (SPREADING, IF POSSIBLE, WITH A VIBRATING TABLE-FINISHER, THE SUPPLY RATE OF WHICH IS INDEPENDENT OF THE TRANSLATION RATE); THE COMPACTION IS CONDITIONED BY THE ABSENCE OF AGGREGATES IN THE SAND-BITUMEN MIXTURE (PREFERABLY SELF-DRIVEN PNEUMATIC-TYRED ROLLERS, 1 TO 3 TONNES IN WEIGHT, THE TYRE PRESSURE BEING LOWER THAN 2 BARS, VIBRATING ROLLER OR MIXED COMPACTORS). 20 EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF THE APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNIQUE TO ROAD CONSTRUCTION (A10 AND A11), STRENGTHENING OF PAVEMENTS, RESURFACINGS, RUNWAYS, ETC.
