SR drives for battery electric traction-a comparative assessment

The concept of switched reluctance motor (SR) systems is now widely established, and the basic principles of operation are generally accepted and understood. Here, the author describes how his company have been involved in the development of several drive systems specifically aimed at battery electric vehicles. He argues that this experience enables a stance to be taken which is based on proven figures, in contrast to statements by other groups which have been made on the grounds of little, or even no, practical experience. While this is particularly the case with respect to the requirements of the electronic controller (where some very rash statements have been propagated), it is also the case with the motor design and performance.< >
