RECENT PROGRESS IN RESEARCH OF Tb~(3+) -DOPED FARADAY MAGNETO OPTICAL GLASSES

Tb 3+ doped Faraday magneto optical glass is a new type of functional material, which has wide application foreground in optical fiber communication and sensor. The basic principle of Faraday effect of magneto optical glasses is introduced, the updated progress in research and application foreground of Tb 3+ doped Faraday magneto optical glasses is summarized. The existent problems are discussed. The analyses show that the Verdet constant of Tb 3+ doped Faraday magneto optical glass is as a function of the effective transit wavelength λ t , effective transit probability C t , the number of paramagnetic ions in unit volume N and absolute temperature T , and also is affected by host glass. Although the bigger of Verdet constant, the higher of magneto optic effect sensitivity can be got, the Verdet constant should be increased at the base of assuring overall performance and improving thermal stability and chemical stability of magneto optical glasses.
