EMISSION TESTS OF TWO VOLVO/VME HEAVY DUTY OFF ROAD ENGINES

This report presents the results from emission tests of two Volvo/VME 6 cylinder turbocharged heavy duty diesel engines made for wheel loaders. The test program have included test procedures according to A30 regulation (valid for heavy duty road vehicles in Sweden, test cycle identical to ECE R49) and according to the ISO 8178 C1 test cycle for off road vehicles proposed for Europe and USA. Transient engine tests have also been performed according to the US EPA cycle for road vehicle engines. Two different fuels has been used, reference fuel and an environmental class 2 (MK2) fuel. It can be concluded that major environmental improvements can be achieved by utilization of modern technology, commonly used in road applications since many years. The difference in pollution between the two tested engines was considerable. The modern engine concept tested, the TD 73 KBE engine, even fulfilled the proposed EG DG XI Stage II limits for 7.0 g/kWh and particulates 0.20 g/kWh to be valid for off road engines from year 2000. The report presents the calculated final emission results as well as modal results in detail from the measurements in tables and figures. (A)
