Meaning and Creativity in Language

The statistical/probabilistic approach has lead to important breakthroughs in language processing and to an impressive impact on real-world applications. This paper examines two issues which have not yet been adequately handled: meaning and creativity. To integrate them, and thus further advance the state of the art, requires a new approach to meaning and a meta-level architecture capable of creative insight into problem solving. I illustrate these ideas using ongoing experiments of language games with autonomous robots.
