A Probabilistic Approach for Student Modeling Task

Student modeling is the task of gathering information about the target student in order to offer tailored instruction. To achieve this purpose, the formalism chosen to represent the student module should be able to draw estimations based on a set of restricted and uncertain information as well evolving aspects as a learning process implies. The approach we propose is the dynamic probabilistic network which is a formalism suitable for representing evolving information in an uncertain environment. The probabilistic student module will depict the student’s cognitive states in a domain independent manner which will be used as the source of information to prepare a general instructional plan. This plan, combined with the student’s response diagnose, is refined to a more specific instructional action. In this article, the basics of dynamic probabilistic student module will be presented.
