Several possible levels of analysis are identified, each leading to both quantitative (economic) and subjective (human) risk evaluations. These range from ratings based only on historical design information to application of state-of-the-art inelastic collapse analysis. In any case, information gathering represents a major part of the effort. Each stage requires progressively more detailed information about the structure, as well as more detailed analysis. Two case histories are described, including application to proposed offshore property acquisitions.
