R(a)ising questions: Question intonation revisited: A reply to Batliner and Oppenrieder

Abstract This paper, which is a reply to Batliner and Oppenrieder (1988), supplies some additional evidence for the findings in Geluykens (1987, 1988). It argues that the role of rising intonation in yes/no-questions in general, and in queclaratives in particular, is indeed vastly overrated. Some recent experimental and corpus-based findings supporting this claim are discussed.
