The Behavior of Fabrics in Shear

An analysis has been made of the geometrically similar tests of bias extension and sim ple shear for plain-woven fabrics. This analysis makes possible calculation of the values of the equivalent shear strain and equivalent shear stress, corresponding to measured values of tensile strain and tensile stress in bias extension. Comparison of values thus derived with direct measurements in simple shear shows deviations of varying amounts, depending on the type of fabric examined. It is concluded that it is not possible simply and directly to predict the complete stress-strain properties of a fabric in simple shear from measurements of bias extension.
