Field trials of pavement structures: construction report - Victoria

This report summarises the design and construction, and the results of initial field and laboratory testing, of the test sections installed by the road construction authority, Victoria, at doncaster, about 15 km east of the Melbourne CBD, as their contribution to ARRB project 357 - field trials of pavement structures. Three full depth asphalt sections of thicknesses 125, 200 and 300 mm were constructed on an imported subgrade of soaked CBR 5 per cent at the equilibrium moisture content. The field CBR of the subgrade at construction was much higher than the soaked value, indicating the highly reactive nature of the material to moisture. The stability of the asphalt mixes was well above the minimum specified value and the field compaction of the asphalt exceeded the specified values in all cases. The results of rebound deflection testing on all layers at construction are reported. The deflections measured on the asphalt layers have not as yet been corrected for temperature; this aspect will be analysed in detail and reported later (a).
