XXIX The Kinetics of Cellular Proliferation in Normal and Malignant Tissues

Techniques involving the use of labeled DNA precursors, such as tritiated thymidine (TdR-3H), combined with high resolution autoradiography are providing methods for studying the kinetics of cellular proliferation in normal and neoplastic tissues.i'" Cell population kinetics in vivo are being analyzed in experimental animals most effectively following the incorporation of TdR-3H into cells synthesizing DNA and preparing for division.3-6 ,9 ,1l ,12 However, the hazards and costs of techniques involving multiple sampling procedures and the use of radioactive precursors which are incorporated into the heritable material of the cell have precluded the widespread application of these methods for analysis of cell population kinetics in man, and thus, the amount of quantitative data available on cellular proliferation rates, growth rates and control mechanisms in normal and neoplastic human tissues is small."?"
