A Memory-Efficient CAVLC Decoding Scheme for

Thispaperpresents amemory-efficient CAVLC decodingarchitecture forH.264/AVC.In the proposed architecture, notonlythememoryspaceisreduced fordecoding thesyntaxelements suchas coeff_token, total_zero, and run-before, butalsothedecodeefficiency isimproved. After the analysis ofthedecoding principle oftheCAVLC,wesimplify the coeff-token VLD table andpropose anewcoeff-token VLD based on arithmetic operation andthelook-up tablecombination architecture. Therun-before VLD canusedthesameprinciple as theproposed coeff-token VLD.Otherwise, theproposed scheme alsoadopethezeroblockskipping technique andmultiple symbolsdecoding schemewhen decoding SignTrail. The simulation results showthatoursystem canrunat168MHzclock frequency andtheaverage cycles fordecoding onemacro-block is136cycles. The proposedarchitecture canachieves an approximate 39-53%savings inmemoryaccess without video quality degrading.
