Interpersonal verbs and interpersonal experiences.

Abstract This study investigated differences in the latency and duration of interpersonal experiences named by two different verb types: “experiencer-stimulus verbs,” for which the experiencer is the subject and the stimulus is the object of a sentence, and “stimulus-experiencer verbs,” for which the experiencer is the object and the stimulus is the subject of a sentence. Forty-five U.S. undergraduates responding to a questionnaire estimated that experiences named by experiencer-stimulus verbs generally develop more gradually and endure longer than do experiences named by stimulus-experiencer verbs.
