Development and Performance of Fiber-Optic Sensor Systems for Absolute and Quasistatic Measurements in Civil Engineering Applications

As fiber-optic sensor (FOS) technology is gradually maturing, a large amount of research has already been done on almost every imaginable sensing mechanism and implementation issues are now the focus of attention. Packaging, interconnecting, reliability, accuracy, multiplexing and especially cost-effectiveness are the most crucial of these issues for the wider adoption of FOS. Despite intensive fundamental research worldwide, practical and feasible applications of FOS technology in civil engineering (CE) are still minimal.
