The antiwear properties of potassium borate as an oil additive

The antiwear properties of potassium borate as an oil additive and the effects of hydration water of potassium borate on performance have been studied using a Four-ball Machine. AES and XPS were used to study the wear scars. It is shown that potassium borate has a good antiwear function due to the formation of a film containing boron, potassium, oxygen, carbon and iron. The existing form of boron on wear scars is potassium borate which can be dissolved in water
