Tunable antenna systems for wireless transceivers

In this paper, several tunable antenna designs for wireless transceivers using RF MEMS tunable capacitors are presented in a comprehensive manner. These designs are based on antenna frequency agility in order to cover a minimum of three different wireless bands (IMT, PCS, DCS) although the same principle can be applied for operation over a broader spectrum range. Different tunable antenna design approaches are discussed, highlighting the benefits and challenges of employing reconfigurability.
