Remote-Sensing Technology

Spatial information systems provide information about the Earth and its environs. On the Earth’s surface, different features are distributed and phenomena are occurring at different places, and these require reliable and quick information. Here remote sensing plays an important role in providing near real-time unbiased spatial information to the user community for mapping the Earth’s features. After reading this chapter you should be able to understand the following: The meaning and definition of remote sensing Remote-sensing processes and platforms The electromagnetic spectrum and interaction of electromagnetic radiation Elements of photo/image interpretation Earth-resource observation remote-sensing satellites, especially those launched by the United States, Europe and India Digital image processing—pre-processing, enhancement, image classification and accuracy assessment Integration of remotely sensed data and GIS.
