The invention discloses a method for managing multimedia files, comprising the following steps: playing and downloading a multimedia file, and judging whether playing information of the multimedia file reaches a preset interest threshold; saving the multimedia file in a local database when the playing information of the multimedia file reaches the preset interest threshold; and stopping downloading and saving the multimedia file in a preset non-interest database when the playing information of the multimedia file does not reach the preset interest threshold. The invention further provides a corresponding device. Whether a played multimedia file is a multimedia file of interest to users is judged in the playing and downloading process, the multimedia file is downloaded and saved in a local database if the played multimedia file is a multimedia file of interest to users, and downloading of the multimedia file is stopped and the multimedia file is saved in a non-interest database if the played multimedia file is not a multimedia file of interest to users. There is no need to download all played multimedia files and save all played multimedia files in a local database, so that the local storage space is saved, and the traffic of local downloading is saved.
