institution, hospital emergency services, and the natural health movement. But my study of the organizational and social psychological aspects of the treatment situation in tuberculosis hospitals in the 1950’s was the first major piece of research that I carried out under my own initiative and direction. The chief product was the book Timetables (Roth, 1963). I have also written a number of reports dealing with data gathered in the study as well as a series of published papers. In the ensuing discussion, Timetables will serve as a focal point, but it should be kept in mind that this was part of a larger study with other written products.
