Polarization-independent all-optical regenerator for DPSK data

We propose and experimentally characterize polarization independent all-optical phase-preserving amplitude regeneration of differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signals exploiting four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with co-polarized dual-pump architecture. The regenerative capability and the robustness of the system against conversion range is investigated, demonstrating Q-factor and bit error rate (BER) threshold margin improvement with almost steady optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and FWM conversion efficiency within a range of 6 nm for an NRZ-DPSK 10 Gb/s data signal.
