Optimal expansion of a heated working fluid with phenomenological heat transfer

Abstract The optimal motion of a piston fitted with a cylinder containing an ideal gas is examined. The gas is heated at a given rate f(t) and coupled to a heat bath with a heat transfer law q ∝ Δ( T −1 ) for a finite amount of time. The optimal path which maximizes the expansion work is obtained. Several applications of the optimal path are also given.
