The investigation of the quality of thick concrete by ultrasonic pulse propagation

Summary The velocity of ultrasonic pulses through concrete is measured by an oscillograph timing technique. The relation between velocity and concrete quality has been described els ewhere. To increase the rangge—about 8 ft through good quality concrete with the standard instrument (type UCT)—higher power, and low frequency sharply directional magnetostriction tranducers were used. Practical details of the tests are described, and it is considered that 20 ft is the maximum path length possible with this method. Further developments are discussed.
