In the initial design of the two-phase excited switched reluctance(TPESR),the finite element analysis(FEA)is a basic tool. But it is too slow.So the nonlinear variable structure equivalent magnetic circuit model(MCM) of TPESR motors is established to improve the design efficiency.A new air-gap permeance calculation method has been presented and the treatment of local saturation is discussed in detail. The magnetic characteristics of the TPESR motors are analyzed with this method and the results are compared with FEA and experiments. These comparisons verifiy that MCM is much quicker than FEA with reasonable precision and suitable for initial motor design.
