Introduction to Signal Theory

Information Theory is concerned with the quantification, coding and transmission of information. So far we have discussed the quantification and coding in only rather special cases where we had a set of discrete events, such as the letters of the alphabet. We want to be able to analyse the information content of much more general situations, such as the amplitude modulated sine wave of figure 6.1(a) or the set of samples of a speech waveform of figure 6.1(b). This leads to the study of signals and signal theory.
