Cutting Dynamics Mechanism

In this chapter, a mechanical model is developed for cutting dynamics caused by coupled interactions among the tool-piece, work-piece, and chip during the complex cutting operation. Four regions are used to describe four distinct cutting processes. The switching from one motion to another in the adjacent region is to characterize the specific tool–workpiece interaction at the boundary, and such a switching is a key to understand cutting mechanism. The domains and boundaries for cutting dynamical systems are discussed using the discontinuous system theory in Chap. 2. The passable motions and nonpassable flow to the boundaries are discussed, and the corresponding criteria are given. In addition, the switching bifurcations from passable motions (nonpassable motion) to nonpassable motion (passable motion) are developed for cutting process.
