Application of Spiritual Search to Optimal PIDA Controller Design for Cardiac Pacemaker

This paper presents an application of the spiritual search (SS), one of the newest and most efficient metaheuristic optimization algorithms, to optimally design the proportional-integral-derivative-accelerated (PIDA) controller for regulating the heart rate of the cardiac pacemaker in the cardiovascular system. For this biomedical engineering problem, designing of the PIDA controller can be considered as one of the constrained optimization problems. With the proposed SS-based design approach, results obtained by the PIDA controller will be compared with those obtained by the PID controller. Simulation results show that the PID and PIDA controllers for the cardiac pacemaker are optimally designed by the SS. The PIDA can provide faster and smoother response than the PID controller, significantly.
