Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing: A Perspective

Additive manufacturing is another word for Rapid Prototyping (RP). Rapid Prototyping in its earlier form was done using Stereolithography (a term coined by Chuck Hull in 1984). According to a variety of literature, additive manufacturing (AM) is incontestable to bring about a revolution in the way products are designed, manufactured, and supplied to end users. AM technology has gained significant academic as well as industry interest due to its ability to create complex structures with customizable features and materials. The goal of this review paper is to organize this body of knowledge surrounding AM, and present current barriers, findings, and future prospects for manufacturers and researchers. The evolution due to AM in areas such as material, design, and production also has been discussed.
