Quality and resource controlled transmission of images

This paper presents an image transmission protocol which allows to transmit images controlled by resources and quality demands. Depending on these parameters, the reduction of image data, the selection and the configuration of a compression algorithm are done automatically. The automatic selection mechanism is based on the results of an investigation of image compression agorithms we conducted in order to find out the strengths, weaknesses and configurability of JPEG, fractal and wavelet-based compression.
