This article reports the findings of a 1987 survey designed to determine the educational preparedness and attitudes of librarians who participate in bibliographic instruction (BI). Results of this survey point out shortcomings in pro fessional education and administrative support and recog nition, among other problems faced by BI librarians. The study also examines how BI librarians cope with these shortcomings, a self-evaluation of teaching effectiveness, and efforts at self-improvement. The professional organi zation of BI librarians, seminal works highlighting the need for BI, and a 1981 study of educational preparedness of BI librarians and its resulting recommendations are used as points of departure and/or bases for discussion.
