IEEE 1451.5 Standard-Based Wireless Sensor Networks

Recent advances in wireless communications, networking, electronics, and microprocessors have enabled the development of low-cost, low-power wireless sensor nodes. Wireless sensor networks have become more widely used to monitor the condition of the environment, machining systems, and other applications. Sensor data exchange, sharing, and interoperability are major challenges when using wireless sensor networks for condition monitoring. Standardized sensor data formats and communication protocols can help to solve these problems. This paper mainly focuses on wireless sensor networks based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1451.5 standard, including the architecture, network interfaces, wireless transducer physical interfaces, a prototype system, and case studies.
