Penstock rehabilitation: Developing the right strategy

Factors relevant to repairs and upgrades of penstocks are discussed in the article. Changes in operating conditions, serviceability problems, and strength requirements are examined. Emphasis is given to evaluating surge tank removal and optimal penstock sizing. A systematic analytical approach accounting for current operating conditions is outlined for identifying the most cost-effective rehabilitation strategy.
