A new era of circuit, antenna, and communication system engineering is at hand. With carrier frequencies escalating dramatically to 60 GHz and higher, data rates will be measured in tens of gigabits per second; consequently, uncompressed high-definition media transfers, sensing and radar applications, and near-instantaneous access to enormous libraries of information will become conventional. By 2015, we can expect to see millions of 60-GHz communication devices in consumers’ hands. Millimeterwave (mm-wave) and subterahertz devices operating into the hundreds of gigahertz will also become more prevalent and eventually ubiquitous with the growth of data rates demanded by consumer, industrial, medical, cellular, and sensing applications. These higher frequency devices will depend on the circuitand system-level advances developed for 60 GHz, and may offer data rates on the order of hundreds
