Tactile pattern perception

Because efforts to use the cutaneous sense for conveying speech and visual information have met with only partial auccess, it would be useful to understand better the pattern-sensing capabilities of touch. This paper is an account of the sensory and perceptual factors known or hypothesized to limit the tactile perception of simple two-dimensional patterns, with special attention to the limited spatial bandwidth of touch.
