Pre-design evaluation of disused quarries as landfill sites

Abstract This paper outlines how faults and fracture zones may be detected with use of a total field precession magnetometer during the initial and preliminary stages of the assessment of disused quarries as possible landfill sites. The technique has been applied across a range of lithologies and can help in the more accurate assessment of potential pollutant conduits. The use of standard permeability tests for natural liners and tensile tests for synthetic liners in the pre-design evaluation phase are discussed. The approximate costs of using such tests and geomagnetic profiling in pre-design evaluation are discussed.
