Automating Defeasible Reasoning with Logic Programming (DeReLoP)

This is a descriptionof the DeReLoP projectbetweenthe Artificial Intelligencegroupsat the University of Koblenz,Germanyandthe UniversidadNacionaldel Sur, Bahia Blanca,Argentina. The overall ideais to try to combinethetheoreticalandpracticalwork donein BahiaBlancaandKoblenz andmakeit confluent . Bothgroupsareworkingin thebroadareaof knowledgerepresentationandon applicationsto thedevelopmentof knowledge-basedsystems. While the BahiaBlancagroupdefinedsometheoreticalframeworks for Circumscription, Belief RevisionandPlausibleReasoning , theKoblenzgroupdevelopedandimplementedvariousautomated systemsbasedon logic programmingtechnology:the DisLoP-systembasedon the generalpurpose theoremprover Proteinandvariousvariantsthereof.It seemsvery promisingtrying to usethe systemsavailablein Koblenzfor efficient implementationsof the frameworksmentionedabove. While Koblenzdevelopedandimplementedsystemsfor disjunctive logic programs(DisLoP, see [ADN97] and<URL:http://www.unikoblenz.de/agki /DLP/ >) andfor classicalfirst orderlogic (Protein, see [BFS97] and <URL:http://www.unikoblenz.de/agki/T heTP/ >), Bahia Blanca mainly consideredtheoreticalextensionsandvariantsof CircumscriptionandBelief Revision.
