Abstract The Second Report of the UKAEA Study Group on the ‘Assessment of the Integrity of PWR Pressure Vessels’ was published earlier this year. In this invited article, Dr Whittle reviews the terms of reference of the Study Group, its views on the role of inspection in pressure vessel integrity, on the adequacy of existing inspection techniques and the need for continued development, and on the validation of techniques and their application in practice. Finally, he considers the Report's conclusions and their implications for PWR inspection.
