Cross-Sector Benefits of Accessible Transport

The provision of accessible transport services has increased substantially in the last ten years in Great Britain. That provision includes both services planned specifically for people with mobility handicaps and improvements to conventional mainstream public transport to make it more accessible. Given the increased level of resources used to make these provisions, it is reasonable to consider and, where possible, quantify the benefits which arise through improved transport services. This paper examines the causal relationship between mobility and dependency on welfare and health services and shows the benefits that may arise - particularly the cross-sector benefits - through enabling disabled people to become more mobile.
