The use of VRML for cartographic presentation

Abstract This paper explores the possibilities and implications of spatial representation using virtual reality (VR) tools. Concepts of VR and its linkages with cartography are examined and the non-deterministic nature of VR as a data exploration tool is discussed. The use of the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) is introduced and a project to employ conventional map data in a VRML “virtual world” is described. Further technical issues related to the use of VRML are mentioned.
